Reading Reflection No. 2

Book: How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big - Scott Adams

1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?

The book encourages a healthy lifestyle that prioritizes having a positive mindset and an efficient routine. Adams gives the readers tips to follow, including lessons on how to be a productive worker. I would say the main theme of the book is forming a routine that works for you. Prioritizing tasks, determining when you’re most effective, and forming a system instead of a goal are some of the repeated messages given throughout this book.

2. How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
This class has discussed the routines that businesses develop and how these routines are defined by the entrepreneur that starts the business. This book is a guide on forming an efficient routine. By forming a routine that specifically works for you, you can complete more work. Adams also discusses allocating certain time slots for certain tasks. For example, you may be better at writing in the morning and handling paperwork at night. Entrepreneurs should determine when they are better at certain tasks and complete these tasks only during these times.

3. If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

Writing a schedule:

The participants should write a schedule of their day, from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. This schedule should include both important and trivial tasks. This schedule could help the participants form a routine.

4. What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

I have always been goal-oriented. I thought creating goals and attempting to achieve them was the trick to being productive; however, Adams doesn’t believe this. He believes that creating a system or a routine that works for you is more important than creating goals. He believes the goals will come with an appropriate system. This was an “aha” moment for me because I have never thought of it this way.

  1. Interesting answers Ashley. Ultimately do you think you learned a lot about creating your own business? Would you recommend this book to others? It’s really interesting that the authors is not as goal drive. Do you think this is a smart plan for your business? Your project ideas seems interesting and also very useful, even beyond the class. Will you include these suggestions in your plan?

  2. I think the author makes some great points. There's nothing wrong with setting goals, but a lot of people are creatures of habit, and as soon as that goal messes up their routine, they give up. As someone who is pretty routine-oriented myself, I think an efficient and effective routine could work wonders for others like me. I hadn't ever really thought of it this way though, just like you, so it's definitely an "aha" moment.
