Idea Napkin No. 2
About Me
People will value this product because people value being both physically and mentally healthy. People do not want to live with the anxiety and physical ailments, such as welts and rashes, that bed bugs bring.
What sets you apart from everyone else?
Products that both lure and capture bed bugs with chemical attractants are extremely expensive and must constantly be maintained. This product utilizes hot water as an attractant, rather than chemical attractants. This makes the product relatively inexpensive and equally as effective. This product offers the same amount of monitoring for a lower price. After reviewing the feedback I have received on different posts, I still believe this is the most appealing quality of my product.
Reflection
I believe the appeal of the product matches the target demographic. People who live or are staying in areas where bed bugs are likely to be (urban areas, hostels, college dorms) are generally low-income or middle-class. These individuals cannot spend hundreds of dollars on bed bug lures. This product also appeals to people who travel because it is small and easy to carry. Travelers can plug this item in for a few hours in order to monitor for bed bugs. Although the cost may not matter to this demographic, the convenience of the product is appealing.
I aid in bed bug research in the Urban Entomology Lab at UF. I also take care of the tropical and common bed bug colonies in this lab. I feed the bugs, test insects traps, and aid in an experiment concerning nymphal weight. I received feedback on my last post that this bed bug research is my strongest asset.

Overall, the prototypical customer includes two different groups of people.
1. People who live in places where bed bugs are likely to be - This includes dorms, apartment complexes, and crowded urban areas. There are multiple reasons these places have higher bed bug populations. These reasons include proximity and a higher concentration of low-income people who can't afford pest control. Since bed bugs can easily travel from one room to another in dorms or apartment complexes, these areas host more bed bugs.
2. People who travel - People who travel are likely to encounter bed bugs in hotels or hostels. This product could help them make sure they do not have bed bugs in their hotel room or house (when they return).

I have mostly received positive feedback on this idea, which is why I did not change much of my idea napkin. I did add detail to my target demographic in order to clarify who this product appeals to and why. I also highlighted my experience in the urban entomology lab and took out less-important information from the "about me" section. I received feedback that my research and personal experience with bed bugs was my strongest asset.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like you’ve really streamlined your idea and have developed the key points in a very specific manner. You have identified your target audience and why you meet their need. You have researched them to understand when and why they have this need. This was seen in the detail you added in addition to the previous napkin. You also understand your human capital and how this is helping your develop the product.
Your product seems like it has a lot of ingredients to make it successful. With your background, it looks like you were able to understand exactly what was needed, and how to make it simple and easy to use for people with less knowledge about entomology. But most importantly it's cheap which will make it even more appealing to customers. I think you should include your research and personal experience as part of what sets you apart because your expertise is part of the reason consumers would trust you.
